When it comes to doors, iron is one of the strongest materials you can use. This material is known for its durability, timeless appeal, and high-security factor.
Iron doors can also come as single or double doors. Single doors open and close on one side and lock in the doorframe. Double doors are essentially two single doors of various sizes that swing together and can lock when aligned.
How Much Space Do You Have For a Door?
The first element to consider is how much room you actually have for a door. For example, if you already have a double door, whatever replaces it needs to take up the same area as a double door. If you want to use a single door in the double door’s place, you’ll need to insert sidelights to make up for the extra space.
When remodeling, your contractor will need to make room for your door by cutting a rough opening of about 3/4 inches. A doorframe, also known as a doorjamb, must also be installed to support your door and allow it to be weather-stripped.
If you want a single door with sidelights or a double door, you’ll need to meet with your contractor to discuss whether these alterations are possible without affecting the structure of your home.
Can Your Home Accommodate Different Door Shapes?
The three common door shapes you have to choose from are:
- Straight top- This is the standard horizontal door top.
- Eyebrow top- The top of this door is slightly curved like two slanted eyebrows that are joined together.
- Arched top- The top of these doors are perfectly round like a half-circle.
You can also add a transom, or an arched window, to a straight top door to add some beauty and shape. Adding any unique shape to the top of your new door will require a structurally sound building and the green light from a certified contractor.
